97. Fairytale of New York, The Pogues

This is from the bad old days when Dr S and I were doing our masters at McMaster. Dr S's hippie office-mate Barb introduced us to this song one night after a bunch of scotch. It's a great story - whenever she played it, Barb would say, "You can tell they really loved each other!"

"You're a bum, you're a punk."
"You're an old slut on junk, living there almost dead on a drip in that bed."
"You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot, Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God it's our last."
Yeah, the love really shines through.

Actually, the whole album (If I Should Fall From Grace With God) is great. There's a song on it called Thousands Are Sailing - it really resonated with us after leaving Newfoundland for "Canada." I think our culture shock couldn't have been far behind what the Irish would have felt when they got to New York.

  2. Kelly. I'm going to love your blog (4 pieces in). I've had this CD for many years and like your choice, here. I saw Dave Brubeck's name flit past somewhere... but Scotch!!! I'd hate to introduce you to anything dangerous... but have you met Mr. Jameson? As I call it... "Irish Scotch".. and get a whole slew of Celts pissed-off in one swoop!
