51. Ten Cents a Dance. Ruth Etting

I knew nothing about Ruth Etting before my dad put this on one of his CDs, although I had heard the song before. Born in Nebraska in 1897, Etting got a job in a Chicago night club and caught the attention of a mobster, Moe Snyder (aka The Gimp), who married her in 1922. Ten Cents a Dance was a big hit for her in 1930. Doris Day and James Cagney starred in a 1955 movie about her life, Love Me or Leave Me. I like how this recording has that really old sound (a kind of muted quality). And you can understand all the words!
