One of my all-time favourite pieces. I had heard this many times but when I saw it performed live it made a big impression on me. I love this movement; a lot of it sounds very self-important, but I think it also sounds happy. Just before the 6-minute mark the violin has histrionics, and then you get four bars of low strings going "duddle-ump, duddle-ump, duddle-ump, duddle-ump" (which sort of sounds to me like a bunch of elephants tip-toeing in), and then the main theme comes back, only in triplets, so it sounds faster and kind of funny, as if Brahms is making fun of himself. Thanks to golden-haired C, a real conductor, who suggested that I look at the score so I could figure out what was going on.
